Activities & Events
Free Admission for VeteransBattleship Cove – May 27-29. All active duty, retired and reserve military personnel who show proof of service will be honored with free admission to Battleship Cove.

Memorial Day Ceremony Battleship Cove – May 29. Honor and commemorate the men and women who gave their lives for freedom. Experience a traditional military observance at 12:00 PM with the raising of the American flag from half-staff and a 21-gun salute. The ceremony is open to the public.

Military Service Appreciation Day – Buttonwood Park Zoo
 – 425 Hawthorn St., New Bedford –

On Memorial Day Weekend all active duty, retired and reserve military personnel and their dependents who show proof of served will be honored with free admission to the Zoo.

Wool Days at Old Sturbridge Village – Sturbridge
  – May 27-29
 Wool Days means sheepshearing at Old Sturbridge Village, plus demonstrations of other parts of the seasonal processing of wool, including scouring, carding, dyeing, spinning, and weaving. Try your hand and learn about other fibers available to early New Englanders at our textile exhibit. Wool Days fall on Memorial Day weekend, when the Old Sturbridge Village stagecoach returns for the summer, along with the Quinebaug River Boat Ride.

Paradise City Arts Festival – May 27-29, County Fairgrounds, Northampton. 
Ranked the #3 arts fair nationwide. This is truly one of the most spectacular fairs of fine craft, painting and sculpture in the whole country, lauded for its fresh, innovative approach. Four buildings, a big tent and a lush Sculpture Garden showcase 260 of the nation’s finest artists and craftspeople, featuring furniture, glass, large-scale sculpture, jewelry, paintings, ceramics, fashion and home furnishings. The Festival Dining Tent cooks up sensational cuisine by Northampton’s best chefs and a soundstage featuring live music with a New Orleans beat by the likes of Charles Neville and Samirah Evans. Statewide Events

Blue Star Museums – Blue Star Museums is a collaboration among the National Endowment of the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 1,500 museums across America. First launched in the summer of 2010, Blue Star Museums offers free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day, May 29, through Labor Day, September 4, 2017.

MAY 27

Providence: Film, “D-Day – Over Normandy”: World War II Foundation, Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence. 421-2787, 644-8244, wwiifoundation.org. World premiere of new documentary narrated by Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Q&A session with the producer and director of the film, Tim Gray; linebacker Rob Ninkovich of the New England Patriots, and two Rhode Island first-wave D-Day veterans of Omaha Beach. 1 p.m. $15.

Seekonk: Parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Seekonk High School, 261 Arcade Ave., travels north on Arcade Avenue, north on Newman Avenue and ends at the Hurley Middle School. Complimentary hot dogs and hamburgers at American Legion Post 311, 351 Fall River Ave., after parade. (508) 844-3657.

MAY 27-29

Warwick: Avenue of Flags, Pawtuxet Memorial Park, 100 Harrison Ave. (between Warwick Avenue and Fair Street). 781-4600. More than 300 American flags displayed. May 27-29 9 a.m.-5 p.m., weather permitting. Free.

MAY 28

Charlestown: Parade steps off at 1 p.m. from Ridgewood Drive, follows Old Post (Route 1A) south to King Tom Drive passing through the business district and the village of Cross Mills. Parade stops for ceremonies for those who died on land and at sea at Cross Mills Baptist Church cemetery and Cold Brook Memorial and includes wreath laying. Ceremony after parade at Charlestown Naval Airfield Memorial, Ninigret Park, off Route 1A, in honor of airmen who died, including those in training at the Charlestown naval facility in World War II. Concert by the Wakefield Concert Band, brief speaking program after at Ninigret Park Pavilion.

Warren: Memorial Recognition Program, Vietnam Memorial, Route 136 and Market Street. 9 a.m.

MAY 29

Dighton-Rehoboth: Parade begins near the Rehoboth Council on Aging, 55 Bay State Rd., Rehoboth, at 10:15 a.m., travels on Pond Street for ceremony and flag-raising.

East Greenwich: Parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Academy Field, Rector Avenue, and travels Mawney Street onto First Avenue for a wreath laying at the World War II Memorial on the corner of Cliff Street, continues north to the Town Hall, 125 Main St., for closing ceremonies at 11 a.m. The “Lone Pipe,” Aaron Lindo, leads the parade, which features police and fire honor guards, elected officials, Grand Marshal Lt. Col. Patrick C. Gallogly, USMC, the Kentish Guards and Varnum Continentals, the Nightlife Marching Band and the Blue Knights Law Enforcement motor group. Local fire companies will display apparatus including antiques from the East Greenwich Fireman’s Association. Closing ceremonies include a recitation of the Gettysburg Address. The 143 Airlift Wing from the Rhode Island Air National Guard provides a flyover. Exeter: Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail. Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 325, Memorial Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Monument, 7 a.m. Guest speakers, roll of names of Rhode Island War heroes. Jim Tourgee Jr., 677-5070.

Fall River: Traditional military observance, Battleship Cove, 5 Water St. (508) 678-1100, battleshipcove.org. Raising of the flag and a 21-gun salute to honor the fallen and Gold Star families. Noon (open to the public from 9 a.m.). Free admission for veterans May 27-29.

Foster: Parade, with wreath laying, starts at 8:45 a.m. from Foster Center and North roads and proceeds to the memorial at the Ben Eddy building, South Killingly Road, Foster Center, for speaking program. In case of rain, observance held at Foster Center Fire Station, Foster Center Road.

Glocester: Parade, Putnam Pike (Route 44), in Chepachet Village. 10:30 a.m. Ceremonies led by local veterans after parade. 568-6206.

Jamestown: Flag Raising by Arnold-Zweir Post 22 of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9447, Veterans Memorial Square, Narragansett Avenue, 7 a.m. Flags that covered the caskets of deceased Jamestown veterans will be on view until 3 p.m. Parade steps off at 10 a.m. Watson and Lawn avenues, south on North Road to the cemetery at Four Corners for a brief ceremony then proceeds along Narragansett Avenue to Veterans Memorial Square at East Ferry for a wreath laying and honors ceremony. Joining post members are the Jamestown Community Band, the Ancient Order of Hibernians Pipes and Drum Band, elected officials, historic military vehicles and other organizations. All are welcome to march. Guest speaker is Geoffrey Gamble. In case of rain, ceremony will be at the Jamestown Recreation Center, 41 Conanicus Ave., at 10 a.m. 423-1808.

Lincoln. Parade steps off at 11 a.m. from Smithfield and Reservoir avenues at the Lincoln/Pawtucket line and travels north on Smithfield Avenue to Walker Street. 333-1100, lincolnri.org.

Little Compton: Parade forms at 9 a.m. at Veterans Field, 8 Meetinghouse Lane, and steps off at 9:30 a.m. and proceeds around Town Commons. All invited to participate. 635-4652, (508) 493-6198.

Newport: VFW Conover-Leary Post 406 ceremony, Storer Park, Newport Harbor, 11 a.m. Ceremony at Newport City Hall, led by American Legion Newport Post 7 and VFW Conover-Leary Post 406 ceremony, 43 Broadway, noon. Guest speaker is Logistics Chief Petty Officer Jeffrey Howell. Miantonomi Memorial Park Tower open Monday 1-3:30 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The tower is open only two days a year, for Memorial and Veterans days. 845-5300.

North Providence: Parade steps off 1 p.m. from North Providence High School, 1828 Mineral Spring Ave., marches down Mineral Spring Avenue , north onto Douglas Avenue and ends at Governor Notte Jr. Park, 1810 Mineral Spring Ave., where a festival will be held until 6 p.m. Food vendors, music, more. 719-1633, northprovidenceri.gov.

North Kingstown: Wreath laying at Civil War Memorial, Town Hall grounds, 80 Boston Neck Rd. (Route 1A), and at memorials at Veterans Memorial Park, Boston Neck Road, at 9 a.m. Parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Wilson Park, West Main, Brown and Phillips streets through Wickford Village then onto Tower Hill Road (Route 1 south) to the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial on the grounds of Elm Grove Cemetery for concluding ceremonies at around 11 a.m. In case of rain, wreath laying for Town Hall and Veterans Memorial Park will still go forward at 9 a.m. and at Elm Grove Cemetery at 11 a.m. Hot dog roast after parade at First Baptist Church, 1135 Tower Hill Rd.

Pawtucket: Pawtucket Veterans’ Council Wreath Laying Ceremonies, at 9 a.m. at shell at Slater Park, Armistice Boulevard entrance; 9:15 a.m. at the hiker monument in Grove Street Park, Exchange and Cottage streets; 9:30 a.m. at the Korean War Monument, Park Place; and 10 a.m. at the Mineral Spring Avenue Cemetery, Mineral Spring Avenue and Conant Street. Main ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, Roosevelt Avenue and Exchange Street at 11 a.m. 725-0191.

Scituate: American Legion Post 19 Parade forms at 10 a.m. at Berkander Field and Institute Lane and steps off at 10:30 a.m. from the corner of Institute Lane and Danielson Pike (Route 6), proceeds west on Danielson Pike to Silk Lane to West Greenville Road, to the steps of the Old Historical Congregational Church for ceremonies. case of rain, ceremonies held inside the North Scituate Community House, 195 Danielson Pike.

South Kingstown: Parade begins at 10 a.m. on Holley Street (behind Benny’s), travels Main Street, to High Street, ending with a ceremony at Saugatucket Park, High Street, Wakefield. USAF veteran Col. Rusty “Waldo” Walden, Parade Grand Marshal. Lt. Col. James Halderman, USMC (ret.), Master of Ceremonies. Parade includes active and retired military, bands, numerous marching groups, community organizations, public safety agencies. Smithfield: Memorial service, Veterans Memorial, Deerfield Park, Deerfield Drive. Presented by American Legion Balfour-Cole Post 64 and Smithfield Memorial Veterans of Foreign War Post 2929 and its ladies auxiliary. Parade of colors kicks off the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. with honor guards from the Smithfield Police and Fire departments.

Warren: Naval Honors Ceremony, Town Wharf, Water Street, 7:45 a.m. Military Honors Ceremony, Town Commons, State and High streets, 8:15 a.m. Parade steps off at 8:30 a.m. from the Town Commons and ends at the South Burial Ground for ceremonies.

Warwick: Parade steps off at 9:15 a.m. from Bishop Hendricken High School, 2615 Warwick Ave., travels south on Warwick Avenue, west onto West Shore Road and ends at Warwick Veterans Memorial Park, 2401 West Shore Rd. West Greenwich: Parade steps off at 1:30 p.m. from 21 Victory Highway (Route 102); speaking program afterward.

West Warwick: West Warwick Veterans Council Observance, West Warwick Veterans Memorial Park, Two Legion Way. Guest speaker is Col. Joe McGraw of the U.S. Naval War College. 9:30 a.m.

Westerly-Pawcatuck: Parade forms at the Pawcatuck Shopping Center, 37 South Broad St., Pawcatuck, Conn., at 8:30 a.m.; steps off at 9:30 a.m., travels West Broad Street, stops on the bridge, turns onto High Street and enters Wilcox Park for ceremonies. 596-0837.

Woonsocket: Observance hosted by the United Veterans Council and the City of Woonsocket, 10:30 a.m., United Veterans Council Armed Forces Park, Davidson Avenue, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I and includes the reading of the names of the Rhode Islanders who lost their lives during that conflict. Rain site, Woonsocket City Hall’s Harris Hall, 8 a.m.
